It was a wet weekend, but it was that very rain that made it memorable. High on the Corridor route below Scafell Pike, with limited visibility and rain slashing down, streams rushing down from the surrounding mountains looked magnificent. As we stood on a high rocky hump with Piers Gill looming nearby, the radio in Ivans pocket sizzling in the wet and trying to locate the other group coming down towards us, we decided to go back down – and then they arrived, emerging from the greyness and we could return having completed the route. Volunteers from the Fix the Fells project met up at the Wasdale Youth Hostel Annexe on a Friday evening looking forward to a bit of hard graft with the Western Upland Footpath Team. Steve Jolley - team leader - had promised us a high day on the Saturday with something a bit lower on the Sunday. We tucked into Steven Sharpe's oriental beef and Kathryn Hartnell's brilliant puddings accompanied by a 'modicum' of alcohol; we needed to be at our best for the work yet to come.
