Fix the Fells land to star in Wainwright docu-drama

22 February 2007

A number of the footpaths currently on the 'to do' list of the Fixthefells project , are being featured on a a 'docu drama' to explore the life's work of Britain's greatest fell walker and writer, Alfred Wainwright.

National Trust staff worked closely with Skyworks TV last summer, and with presenter, Julia Bradbury, to explore four of his famous routes, three of which are on land owned and looked after by the National Trust: Haystacks from Gatesgarth to Summit, Scafell Pike from Seathwaite; Castle Crag from Grange in Borrowdale; and Blencathra at the White Horse pub northwards to Sharp Edge and along the ridge (not National Trust land).

John Atkinson, the Trust's Upland Footpath Manager, introduced Julia to the footpath teams working up on the fells, and discussed the challenges we face in the 21st Century managing the erosion of the fells caused by the infamous Lake District weather, and the millions of pairs of feet following in Wainwright's footsteps!

The Fix the Fells project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and local fundraisers, including the Tourism and Conservation Partnership, work tirelessly to raise funds to continue the major project of protecting and enhancing this amazing landscape, so loved by Wainwright.

The programme begins on Monday 26 February, on BBC4 at 8.30pm, and is a four part series.
