Location:

At the western end of the Langdale valley. Stone age man quarried its slopes to make axes. It is hugely popular due to the amazing views from its summits and dramatic sheer drops.

Site description:

Steep sided fell with many cliffs.

Geology:

Borrowdale Volcanic rock. The rugged profile indicates a rock resistant to erosion.

Ecology:

Tough sedges and grasses, bracken and upland herbs with heather on steeper ground. Bog species in the wetter areas.

Level of use:

Heavy

The Langdale Pikes form part of many popular walks. Close to Ambleside and Windermere, the Langdales are easily accessed from the road system.

Cost

For the past 25 years, work has been done on the slopes of Pike of stickle. In the last ten years, six stretches have been completed costing around £150,000.
