If you can volunteer on an on-going basis, then long-term volunteering is perfect. You can get involved with Fix the Fells through the Lengthsman scheme or as an event leader.
Lengthsman scheme
A 'Lengthsman' is a traditional Cumbrian term for someone who looks after a local right of way in a parish. They can be male or female. Our lengthsmen take part in regular practical work parties and drain runs across the fells. Part of their role is to help visitors understand the need for repairing and looking after upland paths. Fix the Fells Events
Volunteer-led guided walks for the general public help get the message across about Fix the Fells. The guided walks open up areas of the National Park to those who may not have the opportunity or skills to discover it for themselves. Event leaders need to have a good understanding of the area, excellent communication skills and be prepared to complete appropriate training.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need any specialist skills?
No, just an interest in the National Park, helping people enjoy the paths they walk on and lots of enthusiasm. We have a training programme to help you develop necessary skills. Please be aware that some of the work is physically demanding and occasionally involves walking in remote areas of the National Park.
Do I need any special equipment or kit?
We can provide you with waterproofs, tools and equipment to do the tasks. But you will need to get yourself a pair of steel toe capped boots, which we can help you buy.
How often will you need me?
Once you have been trained you can check routes and take part in work parties every month if you wish.
When do you recruit volunteers?
We recruit our volunteers in January and February each year, so they can get involved in our training programme to develop the skills to help look after the fells.
What will I get out of volunteering?
You'll meet like-minded people and explore parts of the National Park you perhaps haven't visited before. You'll work with highly skilled National Trust footpath teams and wardens and National Park Authority rangers and learn lots of new skills.
Who can I contact for more details?
Please contact Tim Duckmanton, Volunteer Co-ordinator at the Lake District National Park Authority on 01539 792674 or email volunteer@lake-district.gov.uk for more information.
