Fellwalking with a shovel

As regular frequenters of the Lake District's many mountain paths, Kendal Fellwalkers were pleased to have the opportunity to join two recent footpath maintenance work parties.

Organized by the Fix the Fells’ project and under the guidance of experienced and trained volunteers, they followed routes on Coniston Old Man and Helvellyn that had already been pitched and stabilised.

Their objective was principally to clear drains of debris, mainly in the form of pebbles swept into them by heavy rain. Armed with brushes, shovels and a good deal of enthusiasm, drains were restored to pristine condition and efforts were rewarded as water began to flow freely off the path rather than down it.

Brushes were also used to sweep small pebbles from the surface of paths with the intention of making them more inviting to follow, so reducing  the temptation to walk alongside, creating further erosion.

Of course, the day was not simply spent shovelling, sweeping and wiping the sweat from the brow. There were convivial breaks for food, drink, chat and moments for leaning on shovels and admiring the view. It was a good day out in the mountains, shared not only with others in the group, but also with passing walkers, some curious, some expressing thanks, some asking advice on the route or the view. All appreciating and valuing our wonderful Lake District mountains and their paths.
