Catbells has a large scar developing quickly on the east slopes (next to Derwent Water). Walkers head straight up and down from the road side to the ridge and a criss-cross of new paths have appeared that have become badly eroded. The aim of this projcet is to tackle that scar.

This is a tricky site and a very popular mountain with walkers and fell runners alike. After several site visits, there is not a straightforward solution to the extensive erosion that is taking place. For this year, we are keen to try some minor landscaping works and use temporary posts and rails to try to divert use away from such a steep and unsustainable line. We hope this will help enable the erosion scar to start to recover. It is by no means certain this will work and a further assessment will be undertaken in the summer of 2014 to measure the success.
